About World Youth Day

WYD-Group 350pxThe international World Youth Day is held every two to three years. It is a weeklong FAITH FILLED FESTIVAL where young people from every corner of the globe gather to celebrate and learn about the Catholic faith.

World Youth Day was started by Pope John Paul II as a way to inspire the youth of the world and encourage them in living the teachings of Christ.

A significant element leading up to World Youth Day is the Journey of the Cross and Icon, which are carried through the world touching the hearts and inspiring holiness. Pope John Paul II entrusted the Cross to the youth in 1984 as a symbol of the love of Christ for humanity. In 2003 Pope John Paul II entrusted the Icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary as a sign of Mary’s Motherly presence close to the young people who are called.
