The Gospel of Mark is the first written account in Christianity of the mission and preaching of Jesus of Nazareth. It is the shortest of the four Gospels and perhaps the most accessible of the four with its simple narrative structure. Mark proclaims Jesus as the Christ. This key proclamation begins in his prologue (1:1) and again at a key incident in the story where Peter confesses his faith in Jesus (8:29).

This introductory talk on the Gospel of Mark looks at
- Some issues and questions about Mark’s Gospel to get us going
- Structure of the Gospel and some key themes
- Mark 1:1-13, the Prologue of the Gospel
- Mark 16:1-8, the Epilogue of the Gospel, as the two bookends of the story.

Mark presents us with the challenge of being a disciple of Jesus today. This is the year of Mark for our Sunday readings and so this could be a good opportunity to see in some detail who Jesus is for Mark. All welcome.

Father Brian Boyle is a lecturer in Scripture at Catholic Theological College in Melbourne. He is a priest of the Diocese of Sandhurst and is the Bishop’s Vicar for Education in our diocese. He is very interested in adult faith education and in opening the treasures of Scripture with and for other adults.
