Sandhurst to Celebrate World Youth Day

SYM WYD 2021 400Every year since 1986, Catholics around the world have been invited by the Pope to celebrate World Youth Day (WYD) as a Diocese on Palm Sunday. Every second or third year, young people also have the opportunity to gather in one location for the international WYD festival with the Pope.

In 2020, Pope Francis invited local Churches, starting in 2021, to move Diocesan WYD celebrations from Palm Sunday to the Solemnity of Christ the King in November.

This year Sandhurst Youth Ministry (SYM) would like to invite all young people ages 15-30 to attend the new Sandhurst Celebrations on Saturday 20th November at St Kilian’s, Bendigo. The celebration will feature workshops, music, speakers, opportunities to meet other young people from the Diocese and will finish with the Vigil Mass celebrating the Feast of Christ the King.

The theme for World Youth Day 2021, chosen by Pope Francis, is:

“Stand up! I appoint you as witnesses of what you have seen” (Acts 26:16).

Given the ever-changing nature of the pandemic, SYM hopes to welcome as many young people to the event as allowed, but will also be live-streaming most of the day to the SYM YouTube Channel for those unable to travel. Parishes and Schools have been encouraged to consider creating a local Hub environment so people can still gather with other young Catholics, even if they are unable to travel to Bendigo.
