In every parish, there are faithful lives that quietly shape its story over decades with prayers offered, sacraments attended, families supported, and communities strengthened. Recently in Kyabram, that quiet legacy was joyfully brought into the light with the celebration of some of the oldest members of the community – Kyabram’s octogenarians and nonagenarians. Mary Zobec fills us in.

“Grey hair is a crown of splendour; it is attained in the way of righteousness,” (Proverbs 16:31).
Throughout the year, many birthdays pass quietly, particularly those of our octogenarians (80+) and nonagenarians (90+). Recently the Kyabram Catholic community gathered to celebrate these special parishioners at Mass.
The words from the Scripture above formed the heart of the celebration at Mass, where Fr Uday Marneni PP reflected on the gift of long life and faithful discipleship. The passage offered more than poetic imagery; it was a reminder that ageing is not a diminishing of worth, but a visible sign of a life shaped by endurance, love and steady faithfulness.
Fr Uday offered a special blessing for the parish’s senior members, giving thanks for their lifelong commitment to Jesus, and the many ways they have enriched the Church and wider community. Through decades of family life, work, service and parish involvement, their presence has quietly carried and sustained the faith of generations.
As Australia continues to experience an ageing population, parishes like Kyabram are increasingly home to a growing number of older parishioners whose contribution remains vital. Far from being passive participants, they are often the steady heart of parish life, bearing witness through prayer, hospitality, wisdom, and lived experience of faith through changing times.
Following the Eucharist, the community gathered to continue the celebration over brunch and birthday cake. The hall was filled with conversation and warmth as parishioners shared stories, memories and laughter. It was a moment that captured something essential about parish life; that faith is not only expressed in liturgy, but also in relationships, shared tables and the simple joy of being together.
The occasion offered a gentle but important reminder of the value of every parishioner. Each person brings unique gifts, and those gifts do not diminish with age—they deepen. Years of faithfulness, resilience and devotion become a living witness that strengthens the whole community.
May the Holy Spirit continue to shower our elderly with abundant blessings, graces, good health and happiness in the years ahead.
