32 Catholic Diocese of Sandhurst Year in Review 2025 Journeying in the Jubilee Year Pilgrims of Hope Throughout the Diocese, people walked together in faith while honouring creation, strengthening community, and living our baptismal calling In the 2025 Jubilee “Year of Hope”, Pope Francis called on Catholics to step forward in faith, deepen their relationship with God, and bring hope to the world. As part of this call, he encouraged Catholics to embark on pilgrimages to sacred sites, as a way to encounter God’s mercy and renew their hearts. Answering the call, Bishop Shane Mackinlay declared five pilgrimage sites in the Sandhurst Diocese. 1. Sacred Heart Cathedral, Bendigo 2. Fr Henry Backhaus’ Grave at St Kilian’s Church grounds, Bendigo 3. The grave of Fr George Galen, inside St Patrick’s Church, Wangaratta 4. The Wahgunyah Mass Tree, Wahgunyah 5. St Mary of the Cross MacKillop Indigenous Garden and Heritage Trail, St John the Baptist Church grounds, Numurkah
